By analyzing different kinds of group portraits we discovered, that the so-called collective portrait is constituted of three main aspects: individuality, pattern and unity (of the group). Collective portraits, in our definition, depict a rather large number of people orderly arranged, but unlike the mass portrait, the individuality of the single person is still perceivable. By using different graphical techniques of reduction and abstraction, images are created, which emphasize either more individuality or unity or patterns. The result is a scheme, which uncovers step by step the strategies that are needed and used to construct group portraits.with Anna Papanastasiou and Magdalena Friedli |
